BCC past Mayors

Bulawayo recently elected a new mayor, 35-year-old City lawyer, Solomon Mguni, representing the MDC Alliance party.

We take a look at the city`s past mayors since 1980.

The first black Mayor for the City of Bulawayo was the late Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu, who took office in 1981 and served until 1983.

He has left a legacy of advocating for sitting tenants to be allowed to buy the council houses they had been renting for many years. This move saw the residents who had been renting homes in Mzilikazi and Makokoba since the early 1940s being given the houses on the basis that they had already paid off the money through rentals.

From 1981-1988, the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) dominated the mayoral post, with ZANU-PF taking over the levers of power from 1988 to 2000.

Since then the opposition Movement for Democratic (MDC) in its various formations has dominated council.

Since independence, there has never been a female Mayor in the city
