Break-in at LSU computer lab

Lupane State University (LSU) reportedly lost property worth thousands of dollars when suspected thieves allegedly broke into the university`s computer lab and stole computers.

The incident happened during the festive holiday when the university was closed for vacation.

The computer lab is situated at Parkade Center in Bulawayo`s Central Business District.

LSU director of marketing and communication Zwelithini Dlamini confirmed the incident when sought for comment.

“I can confirm that a theft occurred at Parkade computer lab where 11 CPUs and eight monitors were stolen. We made a police report.

“The actual dates when the break-in occurred are not known as it happened during the holiday when everyone was away,” said Dlamini.

An official at the university who spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorised to speak to the media said whoever broke into the lab had access to the keys.

“What is strange about this incident is that there was no forced entry, whoever stole the university property might have had access to keys and they used the main entrance to the lab,” said the source.

The computer lab does not have security cameras.

Students at the university who spoke to CITE said they were told by authorities that the computer lab was undergoing an upgrade.

“I was at Lupane Parkade Centre computer lab and someone told me that all the computers in the lab were stolen and I believe that there were between 30 to 40 computers there. For now, it’s a secret if you want to use the lab they will tell you that it is undergoing an upgrade,” said the student.

Contacted for a comment ZRP Bulawayo deputy spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said they were not aware of such a case.
