Covid-19 claims 81 more lives in Zim

Eighty-one more people died of Covid-19 while 2 089 contracted the virus, the Ministry of Health and Child Care reported yesterday.

Of the 81 deaths, Harare recorded the highest number of fatalities with 28 deaths followed by Bulawayo which reported 17 deaths.

To date, the Country has recorded 105 656 Covid-19 cases and 3 421 deaths.

Of the 15 217-tests conducted yesterday, the positivity rate was 13.7 percent.

“2 089 new cases (all local) and 81 deaths reported today (7 day rolling average for new cases fell to 1 778 yesterday),” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

The Midlands province recorded the third-highest number of Covid-19 deaths with 10 deaths, Mashonaland East recorded nine deaths, Manicaland recorded seven deaths, Masvingo recorded four deaths, Mashonaland West recorded three deaths, Matabeleland South recorded two deaths while Matabeleland North reported one death.

Of the 2 089 new Covid cases, the highest number was recorded in the Midlands province which recorded 338 cases.

Mashonaland East reported 298 new cases, Manicaland 292 cases, Harare 235 cases, Masvingo 206 cases, Mashonaland Central 147 cases, Bulawayo 146 cases, Matabeleland North 135 cases, while Matabeleland South reported 84 new Covid-19 cases.

In the hotspot areas which were identified by the Ministry, Harare reported (235). In Mashonaland West province, the hotspot areas reported Hurungwe (26). Kariba (12) and  Chegutu (67).

Mashonaland Central reported 34 cases in Bindura and Mazowe (37). In Mashonaland East, Marondera (75) and Murehwa 76). Under Masvingo Province, Bikita (26), Chiredzi (70) and Mwenezi (75).

In Bulawayo, the hotspot areas reported that Northern Suburbs (32), Nkulumane 26) and Emakhandeni (68).

“Vaccination update: 31 371 received the first dose today bringing cumulative for 1st dose to 1 593 656 while 17 247 received their second dose bringing cumulative for second to 730 378,” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

The ministry added that as of 28 July 2021, there were 756 hospitalised Covid-19 cases.

“New admissions 124, asymptomatic 219, mild to moderate 388, severe 101 and 48 in Intensive care Units,” they said.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care said the national recovery rate stands at 69 percent which saw the active cases go down to 28 841 and 73 394 for recovered cases.
