Binga man kills father over witchcraft claims

A man from Lusulu in Binga has been arrested for murder after he allegedly used a knobkerrie and shovel to kill his father.

The incident occurred on Independence Day when a drunken Brighton Ncube (37) of Sichitumba village under Chief Dobola arrived home and started accusing his father, Scava Ncube (63) years, now late, of bewitching him, police confirmed.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda said Ncube arrived home from a beer drink and secured his parents’ bedroom hut door from outside and set it ablaze in an attempt to burn them inside, and when they escaped, he pummeled his father who died upon admission to Lusulu Clinic.

“On 18 April 2023 at around 0100hrs, the accused person arrived home from a beer drink and he found Scava Ncube, his biological father, and the informant who is his step mother sleeping in the bedroom hut.

“He then woke up Scava Ncube and asked him who his real biological father was. Scava Ncube then replied that he was his father and the accused person told him that if he was his biological father he wasn’t going to bewitch him and make him suffer,” said the police in a statement.

Ncube allegedly tied the bedroom hut door with a wire from outside and set the hut on fire. The now deceased managed to break the door and he and his wife escaped.

Ncube fled from the scene.

The deceased and his wife Salia Munenge who is the informant sat around a fire as their hut had been burnt down.

However, their son returned and from behind, hit his father at the back of the neck once with a knobkerrie.

“Scava Ncube fell down and the accused person took a shovel and hit him several times on the head resulting in Scava Ncube sustaining severe head injuries. Salia Munenge, seeing the accused person assaulting her husband, fled for her life and disappeared in the bush. The accused then went away leaving Scava Ncube lying on the ground,” said the police.

A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The elderly man was taken to Lusulu clinic where he died upon admission.

The body of the deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem.
