Women bear the brunt of economic crisis

Young women in Bulawayo say they bear the brunt of the economic upheavals currently afflicting the country.

Some of the young women who spoke to CITE said they have been affected by the recent price hikes with sanitary wear now beyond the reach of many.

Zimbabwe’s economic crisis deepens everyday with prices of basic commodities going up almost every day.

This has resulted in some shops closing and others opting to demand US dollars and South African Rand.

Buhle Nkomo said young women are becoming pressured to engage in uncanny activities to acquire money to provide for their well-being.

Another young woman Belinda Phiri said sanitary wear has not only become difficult to access to urban young women but rural women as well and this is causing them to resort to unhygienic methods.

She said the government has to come up with a solution for young women to access sanitary wear in affordable prices as they are a requirement for every girl and woman.

Sindiso Dhlamini, said young women at universities are now pressured to engage in risky behaviour as a means of survival.

The young women appealed to the government to come up with solutions to end the economic crisis.
