NUST employees, lecturers down tools

National University of Science and Technology (NUST) employees and teaching staff have declared that they are incapacitated to discharge their duties owing to the late disbursement of their February salaries.

In separate letters, Tuesday, the National University of Science and Technology Educators’ Association (NUSTEDA) and Workers Committee informed the university management that their members will not be reporting for duty as from February 26.

“NUST teaching staff will not be able to report for duty from the 26th of February 2020, until they have been capacitated to do so,” said NUSTEDA president Alois Muzvuwe.

The lecturers noted that they were not on strike and they want to report for duty “but they cannot afford to do so.”

“The union, therefore, pleads with you not to victimise or punish people who are genuinely failing to attend to their duties due to this incapacitation.”

The Workers` Committee also raised concern that the university management had failed to review their salaries.

“Today the 25th is the Payday for members of staff but nothing has come and no one seems to know when the salaries will be reviewed and paid,” said the committee chairman, R Dube.

Muzvuwe added that the economic situation in the country had added to their suffering.

“The high cost of living has brought about a lot of suffering among lecturers at the National University of Science and Technology. It goes without say that salary increments effected by many institutions from January 2020 to February 2020, have since resulted in a situation where prices of commodities have substantially shot up,” he said.
