Uncollected garbage continues to haunt Bulawayo Councillors

As the five-year term for the current Bulawayo councillors comes to an end, uncollected garbage in the city centre continues to haunt them despite the introduction of several initiatives to clean the city.

Even in their last full council meetings before the country holds elections on 23 August to elect new councillors, the current councillors were still discussing how to rid the city of heaps of garbage that has become a permanent feature in the streets.

Ward 7 councillor, Shadreck Sibanda said it was concerning that littering remained a challenge for the local authority despite the introduction of night -time refuse collection program.

“Sometime last year, the house proposed and agreed that the cleaning of the city will be done at night but to my surprise, we still find the city centre dirty, especially in the morning when we wake up,” he said.

“Why are we not finding our streets looking much better especially in the morning since we all agreed last year that the cleaning of the city should be done at night?” said Cllr Sibanda.

Bulawayo Mayor Solomon Mguni also concurred that the city centre is dirty.

“For us who go to church on Sundays, in the morning the streets will be something else and on Mondays, they seem to be something else, especially the CBD, so I am sure the committee will revisit its strategies,” he said.

The Chairperson of the responsible committee, Lilian Mlilo said the committee will look into the matter.
