Nineteen more people succumb to Covid-19

Nineteen (19) more people succumbed to Covid-19 Wednesday despite the country’ high national recovery rate of 91 percent, latest statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care indicate.

The 19 who passed away yesterday bring the cumulative total of coronavirus fatalities to 4, 438 since March last year.

Of the 19 people who died, eight were from Harare, four Matabeleland South, three Manicaland, and two Matabeleland North while Bulawayo and Mashonaland West had one each.

“One hundred and eighty-seven (187) new cases (all local) and 19 deaths [were] reported today (yesterday),” said the Ministry of Health in its latest update.

“Seven-day rolling average for new cases fell to 178 today (Wednesday) from 207 yesterday (Tuesday).

A total of 470 new recoveries were recorded yesterday with active cases remaining at 6, 995.

“As of 01 September 2021, Zimbabwe has recorded 124, 960 cases, 113, 527 recoveries and 4, 438 deaths,” said the Ministry.

This week the country recorded 30 percent decrease in the number of infections, with 1 785 cases having been recorded during the week under review, compared to the 2 564 reported the previous week.

“This reflects that the infection control measures being implemented by the government are yielding results,” said Information Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, during a post cabinet briefing Tuesday.

“There has also been a corresponding decrease in the number of people in need of hospitalization for COVID-19. The bed occupancy rate was 14.5% during the review week, compared to the 17.8% reported previously.”
