Lightning kills two people in Binga

An elderly woman and her teen daughter died while another family member was injured after being struck by lightning in Siambombo village, Binga, on Friday afternoon. 

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed receiving the report regarding the death of Betty Muzamba (55) and her daughter Alumbwe Muleya (17) under chief Siansali. 

The incident reportedly happened at around 12 mid-day. 

“The two deceased were sitting in the kitchen hut in the company of the other survivor Margaret Muleya,” Makonese said. 

“It had just started to rain when all of a sudden the kitchen was struck by lightning which killed the mother and her daughter suddenly, while Muleya was thrown outside the kitchen. 

“The survivor managed to scream for help, and was heard by the owner of the homestead Siabadu Sanganisa Muleya (90) who was in the couple’s bedroom hut and he found his wife and daughter already deceased.”

Makonese said the bodies of the deceased were taken to Binga hospital which confirmed that their death was due to lightning. 

Margaret was referred Katiangwe clinic where she is receiving treatment. 

The deceased are yet to be buried.
