‘Bulawayo is a Covid-19 hotspot’

BULAWAYO Health Services Dr Edwin Sibanda says the whole city is a Covid-19 hotspot due to the unrestricted movement of people at a time when the city has been recording an increase in confirmed cases.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care recently classified Nkulumane, Emakhandeni and Northern Suburbs as Covid-19 hotspots.

In an interview with CITE, Dr Sibanda explained that for the purposes of administration at health care level, the city is divided into three districts.

“The city for administraion purposes at health care level is divided into 3 districts/divisions, namely Nkulumane, Emakhandeni and Northern Suburbs district,” said Dr. Sibanda.

Nkulumane district comprises of Nkulumane, Tshabalala, Maqhawe, Nketa, Pelandaba and Dr. Shenan BG clinics.

Emakhandeni district covers Pumula, Pumula South, Luveve, Cowdray Park Magwegwe Emakhandeni and Njube Clinics while the Northern Suburbs district covers Entumbane, Mpopoma/EFWartson, Mzilikazi, Northern Suburbs and Princess Margaret Rose clinics.

“The whole city is basically a hotspot, as people move freely, for example, a Cowdray Park resident can work in Nkulumane and vice versa, and all of them meet in town. CBD is part of the Northern suburbs and the status is fluid,” he said.

Dr Sibanda explained that Covid-19 hotspots are areas with a high number of positive cases showing active transmission.

“Hotspots are not permanent,” he added.

Kariba, Karoi and Kwekwe have been put under localised lockdown while Mhangura (Mashonaland West), Masvingo District, Chiredzi (Masvingo province),Mt Darwin (Mashonaland Central) have also been classified as hotspots
